Dr. Fred Hickernell, Chair of Applied Mathematics at Illinois Institute of Technology, highlighted the many applications that require the computation of an average. You may want to know the average performance of your investment portfolio or your average speed while commuting to work. The results of a political poll are an average. The
fair price of a call or put option is an average. Dr. Hickernell explained how to compute these averages and highlighted the common pitfalls in not computing the correct average.
Upon conclusion, Dr. Hickernell assisted in awarding a number of Oakton students awards for their performance in the Math Competition.
