Approximately 40 people attended a talk by Dr. Paul Gross (PGross@nl.edu) and Dr. David Rice (DRice@nl.edu) from National Louis University on the current condition of healthcare fields and the careers that most do not think of when considering health care as a career.
Between 2008 and 2018, the healthcare industry will add more new jobs than any other U.S. industry. This presentation surveys educational requirements, demand for, and average salaries of about 50 health care careers, mainly in the area of patient care. Students interested in healthcare tend to choose careers they are familiar with: doctor, nurse, dentist, pharmacist, optometrist, but there are many important jobs that are less well known and require different skills.
A path less taken:
1) looking for jobs that don't fit in the help wanted categories
2) looking for new and undefined jobs
3) combine, recycle, repurpose and and rename
4) inventing jobs--working without employment
5) including the biggest player in the health care industry
Dr. Gross and Dr. Rice will make a copy of their PowerPoint slides available upon request.
