Oakton wins two Skyway STEM Poster Competition Awards

On Friday, April 8th, McHenry County College hosted the Skyway STEM Poster Competition in which six of the eight Skyway Conference member colleges submitted 36 student projects. Oakton presented six projects:

Kyle Van den Bosch & Agnieska Szarzec Biological Sciences
William Stawicki & Jinu Thomas Biological Sciences
Saman Misbah, Seung Yun Hoe, Emine Kocakova Biological Sciences
Samantha Chavez Biological Sciences
John Kowols Math/Technology
Ninos Hermis & Mindaugus Balsevicius Physical Science

Oakton won in two categories!
Kyle Van den Bosch & Agnieska Szarzec
1st place Biological Sciences for
"Effects of plant growth regulators on the inhibition of tomato seed germination by allelochemicals in the berries of common buckthorn"

John Kowols
2nd place Math/Technology for
"Solar Updraft Tower-Concept Scaling and Evaluation"

The projects were outstanding. Student were required to do original research, documentation and poster, including a presentation to the judges. They are all awesome! The winners' work was tremendous.

Thanks to the faculty Michael Carr, John Carzoli, Joe Kotowski, Mack McKernan, and Jeff Moro engaged in the STEM program who mentored these students as they worked on these projects.
